Two opposing forces cause either a balanced or unbalanced outcome. For example, in the first force diagram above, the two characters have equal forces acting upon the rope, resulting in a stable and balanced position. However, in the second diagram, the character on the right has a greater force upon the rope, causing the rope to proceed in his direction with the force of 20 Newtons. Another example is if you drop a piece of paper. The opposing forces are gravity and air resistance. The paper continues downward, meaning that gravity is the greater force against air resistance.
